Ohara Keizan (小原慶山)

Keizan OHARA (date of birth unknown - September 7, 1733) was a painter in the middle of the Edo period. He was appointed as kara-e mekiki (one of the services of Nagasaki Magistrate's Office in charge of evaluation of artistic articles exported from China and sketching of traded items, birds and animals) by the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office.

His inami (personal name) is Gashun, his azana Kako, and his original pseudonym Keizan. He was from Tanba.

Brief Biography
He was born in Tanba (Kyoto) and lived in Kyoto. At first he learned painting from Masunobu KANO, went to Nagasaki for the purpose of study in his middle age and became a disciple of Jakushi KAWAMURA. He was assigned as kara-e mekiki and goyo-eshi (official painter) by the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office after Shuseki WATANABE. He established various painting styles of the Nagasaki School. He later became a master of Gentoku ISHIZAKI. He created figure paintings, kacho-ga paintings and a portrait of a monk who looks like Genki KITA. His child is Hazan OHARA.
